Twogeebs: The Ski Mask Way

Alright so boom we are back, my friends and in 2022 I’m moving through these Apple Music streets with a different kind of vigor. I do this for you because this year I want you to avoid as many struggle raps as you can. In-between making lists and even running the site for a bit I spent a lot of time with the music of Twogeebs. A ski-masked, cat-loving, aggressive emcee out of New Jersey who you should be paying attention to.

Sidenote: You gotta really appreciate a nigga who wears ski masks while talking about smoking his ops being vulnerable enough to let you see his love of cats.

Twogeebs, also known as Zilla F. seems to really have the aesthetic part of being an artist down to a science. Scroll through his Instagram and it's the perfect blend of cool and somewhat mysterious mystique that makes you want to learn more. Dive into the music and you’ll come across song titles that make you curious about the many possibilities of what the actual song can sound like. And although I’ve never met Twogeebs this all seems pretty authentic to who he is and isn’t.

I was running through his latest release Tha Geeb Tape 2 Deluxe which led me through his entire available catalog. Zilla can reach across multiple genres of rap. From boom bap Hip Hop with production reminiscent of something made by an MF Doom super-fan, to Brooklyn Drill Music and even a ballad or 2. If it wasn’t for his signature vocal tone you would think songs like “Beefing With CVS”, a personal favorite about his time as a pill moving entrepreneur with a pharmacist as his plug, and “Woo Walking In Dirty Vans” were made by completely different artists.

The latter of the 2 features Twogeebs displaying the better side of his lyrical gymnastics and is where I believe he reaches his highest levels. That being said I think the best things about him are the chances he takes with songs like “Bowling Ball” and “New Jersey I Love You, But You’re Bringing Me Down” a cover of LCD Soundsystem’s song with a similar title. While he may not have the kind of singing voice you write home about he does have an “I’m me so fuck you” attitude that is heavily appreciated in a world full of artists who put out more facades than songs.

Look at me, my friends, starting the year off with a deep dive with an abundance of dictionary words and waves. And all you had to do was sit back and read in-between scrolling the timeline which of course I appreciate you for. until next time go stream “Tha Geebs Tape 2 Deluxe” and remember…if you’re gonna move like Tristan Thompson you’re gonna need a few million and a Canadian accent so for now be humble.
