Chelcee Grimes’s tribute to her ‘Mother’

There are people in our lives who leave a mark on us that lasts forever. And while they can range from any influential adult during our childhood, for a lot of people they are mothers or maternal-like figures. Their love, their strength, and their encouragement are usually the core components that make us who we are as we grow into the person we need to be. For those with single mothers, the influence of these strong women can be felt even more clearly as they inspire their children and those around them to be the best version of themselves. In her newest single, Chelcee Grimes paints a tribute to her own mother in the emotional song, ‘Mother’.

In the first verse, the English songwriter starts with how she had lost her father at a young age. It left her and her mother ‘on our own, just tryna to get by’ as they adjusted to this new dynamic. The lyrics are powerful and raw in a way that portrays the genuine emotion Grimes must have felt as she describes the hardships her and her mother faced during those first years. But despite the tough times in the song, the chorus delivers a sense of hope and perseverance as the picture of a strong, brave woman is painted in the words: ‘But she never gave up hope/still be smiling when it hurt the most’.

The song continues as Grimes ponders over how her childhood with her mom affected her, inviting the listener to wonder with her about if those moments are the reason behind how she reacts to certain things. The honest lyrics set to the gentle, instrumental music can easily turn your thoughts to your own mother and how she made you who you are today too.

Part of what makes the song so moving is Grimes’ emotive vocals. Her lyrics are powerful, and they are combined with the perfect instrumentals to create a set for the singer’s voice to shine in. Grimes is able to portray love and joy, sadness, and bittersweet nostalgia all in one song as she sings about her mother in a way that pays tribute to every mom. ‘Mother’ walks the perfect balance between being an audibly, enjoyable song with a deeper, emotional meaning to it that will stay with you long after the last note has ended.
