Behind the Yellow Bricks with Cassy London

Pop singer Cassy London has been a rising star and gaining a massive following throughout the years. With her warm, feel-good lyrics about being true to yourself and finding your own way in life, London’s music tells an important message with her stunning vocals and accompanying music.

London spoke with Zeal & Pristine about her new single “Yellow Bricks” along with giving an inside look into her day-to-day, her musical journey, and more. Read below for the full interview:

What inspired the theme and title of "Yellow Bricks”? It always seems like there are those people who don’t like what you’re doing and want to push you down. It’s about not looking back, not getting caught up in the noise, and just keep walking! Self-confidence is key, and it’s easy to lose sight of it sometimes!

“Yellow Bricks” symbolizes having the confidence to build and follow your own road, while up against the people that want to stand between you and your greatness.” -Cassy London

What do you think is the standout of this single compared to your other music? I feel like this single ‘musically’ is very different from my other songs; I experimented with sounds, melodies, and vocal harmonies that are fresh for my listeners.

How did you go about creating this song? Was it inspired by a specific event, or feeling? Yeah! I created this song when I was visiting Stockholm, and on the plane, I kept thinking of the color yellow- I really don’t know why! The song was inspired by a number of experiences that occurred in my life as I was creating my own path. It just seemed like there would always be that person that felt they were entitled to block my way because they didn’t like the direction I was going, but I felt strong; my decisions - were my decisions, and they were good ones for me.

What is your favorite part about creating music? Creating music for me never gets tiresome or something I don’t feel like doing every day. It’s never ending! I’m addicted to all things creative. I also love collaborating and meeting other artists, that’s really exciting! I’m very grateful that music has taken me all of the world and I can’t wait to get on the road again!

What's the overall message you would like to convey to your fans with this song or with your music in particular? I hope my fans feel empowered and uplifted when they hear “Yellow Bricks” and with most of my music overall. I try to balance it with some off-beat and quirky lyrics to poke fun, but the underlying message usually points back to digging deep, finding your genuine self, listening to the authentic voice inside of you and putting it into action. “Suburbs” and “New Age” definitely follow in the same footsteps as “Yellow Bricks.” I’ve always wanted my songs to mean something, more than just a catchy hook.

What led you to first begin creating music? I think the decision was made at about 5 years old no joke! People always ask me how I knew, and my response is that music chose me. I didn’t have a doubt in my mind, the feelings are the same now as they were then!

What's been the best moment of your career and musical journey? Did you expect it to take off like this? I would say when I flew to Stockholm, and started working with some incredible artists/producers etc. I went into the studio ready to try something new each day I was there. After hyper-focusing for many weeks, I feel like I truly broke through for the first time and found my ‘sound.’ I found what themes I kept gravitating towards to and dug deep as to why I kept going there. It was a transformative experience for me and I’m forever grateful for it, it has been a big part of who I am as an artist today.

Do you have any advice or encouragement for aspiring artists? I do! Without sounding cliche, my greatest advice and something I continue to live by is never giving up. Try new things, be open-minded because you never know what can come out of something or what will inspire you. Learn from others, and be true to you.

What do you do when the work starts to get hard, do you have a good support system? I have some wonderful friends I’ve known since I was little that I can vent to and be myself around- I trust their advice. When work gets hard, I take time to myself, I read inspirational books, listen to music that boosts my mood, anything really that helps me to refocus.

Is there anything you would like to share with your fans that hasn't already been discussed? I would like my fans to know that I care about them and their support is what inspires me everyday. I have soo much new music to share this coming year and hope to see everyone at my upcoming shows!
