On A Winning Streak: The Szns

Something's in the air, my friends. We're getting closer to Christmas, covid is back on its bullshit, and Bizzy Bone is on Verzuz fighting. Nonetheless, we continue to Harlem shake through the pressure as best we can. Some more than others which brings me to my next question. Have you heard of Houston artist The Szns

Months back, I was in the digital streets doing 90mph when "Icy" came up in my SoundCloud playlist. A braggadocio vibe about taking another niggas girl. That makes for some of the best R&B right? Good vocals over a simple but dope beat. "Yo man, say you can't have no friends, that don't apply to me." Just like that, he's 1 for 1 in my book.

Sidenote: women, I know you want to be loyal, but also, don't let your boyfriend get in the way of you finding true love.

A few days later, I hear "Tuesday," which, as it stands right now, is my favorite Szns release. Not sure why but hearing a nigga sing about street shit instead of rapping it works so much better over a trigger finger funk trap beat. The vocal mix is well polished, the melody is catchy and there’s really nothing bad I can say about this song. If you see me playing this at the red light, please believe I'm performing it like a music video mind your business. 2 for 2.

About a week later, I'm back on SoundCloud listening to "Jaded," which starts with Szns singing "I hope you happy with him," and I automatically know that if I had an ex, this would be the song I send her when the hoes stop responding. A feelings-heavy ballad about a love that will be there is it's meant to be. This one isn’t on Apple Music so I have to sit through a 15 second ad just to hear it smfh, it’s worth it. At this point, I couldn't find Szns on any social media to even get the hint on where to find his next release. I did eventually, though (@scamszns). 3 for 3.

The Szns recent run has been pretty dope to watch. As someone who's spent a lot of time listening to independent artists, it's sometimes very rare to come across someone who continues to top each previous release. As I'm writing this, we're about a week removed from the release of his "Thankful" triple pack that features "Been A While," "Control," and "Allegations." I believe "Allegations" is the stand-out here. Szns has the vocal talent to shine amongst his peers and I also believe this is truly just the beginning for Szns. He's on a winning streak that I don't see ending anytime soon. I'll be watching for him in 2022, and I think all of you should too.

Alright, my friends, there are mad things to do, like figure out why niggas are so atrocious at NBA 2k. I need answers. Stay safe and stream anything by The Szns cause he doesn't miss.
