Slap of the Week: Free Solo by Mikee Mula

It was 5 pm on a Wednesday, and the energy was like a Dipset album outside (Diplomatic Immunity, to be exact). The sun was high, and I just paid my rent while Giannis [insert last name that I’m not about to google to spell correctly] was still trying to figure out why Khris Middleton is getting starting minutes against the Nets. Meanwhile, I still hadn't found a way to get Kuzma off the Lakers, but I was able to find a new song from New Jersey artist Mikee Mula.

His EP Valleys & Peaks deserves the whole download treatment, especially "Free Solo." I'll admit that I played this song at least six times before even getting into track two. Bang Musik produced the song, and when I tell you that the horns will marinate in your mind for weeks, I am dead serious.

The horns are blended with a light dramatic piano key hovering over filter drums and snares that sit perfectly under Mikee's aggressive voice. This isn't a throwaway verse either; Mikee didn't waste one line here. Mikee displays high-level rap ability, and he is aware. He raps braggadocious about the ups and downs of the grind and just how far ahead he is from the average rapper. Lines like "All this drive, it's Mikee The Motorist" and "Heard ya man slept on me, made sure he got the rest" land perfectly when meshed with the unique and catchy rhythm pocket that he's found on this beat. He can give the verse a melody without it technically being a melody, and it works here.

Side note: I need Apple Music to develop a better shuffle algorithm because nobody needs Meek of the Millions to come through yelling at me fresh off of a Snoh Alegra serenade. Fix it, Tim Cook, or I'm taking my 14.99 elsewhere. (I'm lying, but he doesn't know that).

Valleys & Peaks is an excellent EP that plays perfectly in the car or on the beat pill. My only knock on it is that 13 minutes goes by way too quickly. Outside of that, Free Solo is 100% my Slap of the Week.

Alright, my friends, that's all I have for you. Check out Free Solo by Mikee Mula; it's available on all platforms.
