21 Pilots by Moh Baretta

Moh Baretta of NYC’s Surf Gang recently blessed fans with 21 Pilots his most recent single which I actually discovered on a whim. What’s most striking about Moh Baretta’s single is how the artist combines the music with his unique vocal delivery. East coast trap hi-hats accompany a fast-paced melody and dreary vocals to make this single. Moh Baretta’s use of his voice on 21 Pilots can be compared to certain $uicide Boys tracks—from the melancholy vocals to the swinging nature of the syllables, I was even reminded of 347aiden in certain musical stylistic choices as well. What leaves an impression is that 21 Pilots sounds different than other trap/drill-derived music in the industry today.

Moh Baretta, an NYC native, has a different take on NYC trap. While listeners can definitely hear the drill influence there is a lot of the emo rap or rock influence that still lingers on listeners’ musical palate after hearing 21 Pilots.

As I looked more into Moh Baretta and Surf Gang, I appreciate their individualized take on what NY sounds expressed in the unique musical pockets that their sounds hit. Moh Baretta’s 21 Pilots is a refreshing alternative-trap, drill-influenced song that will pique the interest of new fans and fortify those [fans] already existing.
