Drake and 21 Savage, Her Loss

There were mixed feelings about Honestly, Nevermind when Drake gave it to the public in June, but everyone could agree that it was something about the Jimmy Cooks collaboration with 21 Savage that created the demand for a whole album.

Early this November artist and mogul Drake released Her Loss to satisfy the demand of the fans who appreciated the aforementioned track. There was the immediate inclination to dub this, “his best collaborative album since W.A.T.T.B.A.” however it’s his only collaborative album since, and people can say a lot about Drake but one thing about him— he hardly misses.

Exotic dancer and the face of Her Loss, Suki Baby graces the cover and brings an album laced with hits with her mysterious beauty. The tone is definitely set for the album with the swag-rap-laden, Rich Flex, and Major Distribution. Some of the best tracks on this album are solo songs like Middle of the Ocean and Jumbotron Shit Poppin where Drake is able to rap and sing in and out of musical pockets. Or songs like 3am on Glenwood where 21 Savage reminisces on his old neighborhood in contrast to his current perspective. Of course, the turn-up tracks include BackOutsideBoyz and Circo Loco and it would hardly be a Drake and 21 Savage collaboration without a sprinkle of toxicity as the rappers reminisce on former lovers and friends, as Drake disses his ex’s partner and 21 speaks on the Megan and Tory debacle.

Drake and 21 are world-renowned stars and it almost seems silly to review a project where you know what you’re going to get from the artist. Not only was this project executed perfectly, but the music hit various pockets that were accentuated by 21 Savage’s grungy rap style which allowed for a beautifully well-curated fusion rap album that should be well received by a range of people from the passive radio listeners and people that only know songs because of parties they’ve attended, to the hardcore hip-hop head and underground-rap listener. Her Loss came at a perfect time when rap needs a defibrillator, Drake and 21 definitely injected some energy into the game successfully taking a victory in the final days of 2022’s fourth quarter.
