Spark Master Tape

Spark Master Tape is an anonymous rapper that leads a collective of visual artists, producers, directors, and other musicians. This collective, named Paper Platoon, is known for each of its members wearing masks to conceal their true identities and remaining anonymous to the public. Remaining completely enigmatic since his debut in 2012 with the mixtape Syrup Splash, every one of Spark Master Tape’s tracks are produced by Paper Platoon - leaving his audience to wonder if he has a single producer named “Paper Platoon” or if he uses a combination of uncredited, anonymous producers from the Paper Platoon crew.

Spark has a signature sound that includes a masking of his real voice by pitching it down into a synthetically deep voice. His beats are also extremely unique having enough 808s and hard basslines to appeal to anybody who thinks Travis Scott is the king of blowing out speakers. And utilizing extremely creative samples from rappers such as 2pac and Wu-Tang Clan, to ‘70s soul and funk artists such as Luther Ingram, and even clipping sound FX from video games including The Legend of Zelda, and pop culture icons like Mike Tyson and Samuel L. Jackson among others. Oftentimes going through multiple progressions and arrangements instead of looping in the traditional hip hop form: chorus-verse-bridge-chorus-verse-chorus, each of the beats made by Paper Platoon are damn near their own Hip-Hop symphony. Think of a J. Dilla beat substituted with a trapped-out drum kit, deep bassline with ample 808s, and Spark rapping in deep-voice over it. Spark Master Tape’s witty and technical yet laid back and streetwise flow is reminiscent of rapper A$AP Rocky. You should now you have a rough idea of what Spark Master Tape and Paper Platoon bring to the table.

The first song of Spark’s that I ever had the pleasure of hearing was “Livin’ Lavish” off of his 2016 mixtape Silhouette of a Sunkken City. Paired with the music video, this song is a masterpiece in its own right. The beat goes through about 6 or 7 unique progressions all the while Spark Master Tape rides this bangin’ beat impeccably with his verses. The video is pure visual art even if the song is muted. It is truly awesome in the sense that you won’t be able to take your eyes off of it, leaving you in awe and your eyes peeled. I am a huge fan of the Paper Platoon crew and their artistic output. I’m not even going to try to describe it, but please do yourself a favor and take three minutes to watch it on the link below.

Spark Master Tape is certifiably on another level. This is the kind of experimentally different creativity that hip hop has been lacking for the last decade. He made his own niche and he deserves credit as a legitimately dope artist. I’m amazed with his output: Beats lyrics, and flow. The samples alone are insane, let alone everything else he comes with! You must check out Spark Master Tape. We are all hoping he has another mixtape/album ready to drop soon, he has a new project to be announced for 2022, but for now you can listen to his catalogue which includes mixtapes: Syrup Splash (2012), The #SWOUP Serengeti (2013), Silhouette of a Sunkken City (2016), The Lost Grapes EP (2017), and Seven Sekkonds of Silence (2018), plus a bunch of new singles from 2019-2020. All of Spark’s music is for sale as well as streaming on all platforms. You can find all of the Spark Master Tape mixtapes, singles, leaks and more on his SoundCloud account: “SPARK MASTER TAPE”.

There is a leaked single from Spark Master Tape’s upcoming project entitled “NUKKLEAR DRiiP” which is an absolute banger and super-bass boasting speaker wrecker that gives us a hint at what we can look forward to when the next project drops!

Below are a handful of songs I highly recommend to start with to get a feeling for the style and range of Spark Master Tape:
