All bark, all bite: LustSickPuppy concludes high-energy summer tour

LustSickPuppy is a self-proclaimed “shape-shifting sex canine from outer space.”

The Brooklyn-based artist finished up her North America tour this week following an earlier spring tour in Europe.

For those who haven’t had the pleasure, LustSickPuppy is a known figure in the New York City alternative scene turned international hyperpop sensation.

LustSickPuppy’s music aims to be “reality-warping” with elements of extended screaming, buzzing sounds, and electrical noises. These sounds vary greatly song-to-song and LustSickPuppy’s lyrics are angry: fed up with the patriarchy, screaming about pleasure, and tired of having to act like things don’t bother them.

LustSickPuppy’s discography is comprised of namely singles and EPs. The genre most often used to describe their music is hyperpop, as their music is often compared to that of artists Machine Girl, Death Grips, or 100 Gecs, however, it is impossible to attribute such a subversive and varied library of music to the likeness any one artist.

In relation to their very limited library of songs, the impact LustSickPuppy has made has proved to be exponential. LustSickPuppy’s breakout single Goatmeal has over 2 million streams on Spotify alone.

LustSickPuppy has music that keeps fans coming back for more and more–even without a debut album to their name.

LustSickPuppy’s Instagram shows fans continually showing up and showing out for them, wearing similar makeup to their signature smiley face, fishnets, and decked out in merch. Videos show fans barking and screaming when they come out on stage, and large audiences dancing and screaming along to the words. It’s clear that the cult following LustSickPuppy has garnered can attest to their loyalty.

Due to the faithfully devoted fanbase earned by LustSickPuppy’s unique sound and electric stage presence, the tour was (needless to say,) a success. It is abundantly clear that through these shows LustSickPuppy cultivates a culture welcoming, accepting, and safe to voice your anger and be who you want to be without judgment. On their Instagram, they voice their goal of making the space welcoming and encouraging for BIPOC.

It is one thing to create art, and it is an entirely other thing to create a “world” that resonates surrounding that art. LustSickPuppy has proved that the labor behind the process of creating these subversive, inclusive, artistic spaces does not go unnoticed.
