Huey Briss Gets His Flowers

Please don’t call him a rapper anymore, my friends. Long Beach artist Huey Briss prefers to be called a “Lifestylist”. After listening to his latest release Flowers Before The Grave, it makes sense. Flowers comes off as an introspective look at how far he’s come to get to the lavish peaks he levitates at currently. Briss is as active as you’d like your favorite artist to be and has been putting up shots (that means uploading music) left and right. With his latest shot that sees him pouring his mind out over 15 songs, it’s clear…Briss don’t miss.

“Looking down on n**gas, Cause he got the God Vision,” is the very first bar that Briss flings into the atmosphere as he sets the tone and lets you know what type of time he’s on. Briss proceeds to layer bars back to back tying together motivational lines with lyrics that let you know the difference between him and the lesser emcees all while skipping the hook on the Walt Mansa-produced track. It’s one of the most well-rapped songs on the album and he makes it sound effortless. Even with it being just over two and a half minutes God Vision feels short. That’s a credit to Huey who succeeds at tying together metaphors and similies in a laid-back style that goes hand in hand with each beat.

As far as favorites go Plays Off The Ocean might be the one. A braggadocious effort over what might be the best sample-laced beat on the album. It’s the perfect “ride through the city when the sun is shining” music that transitions nicely into the more uptempo Last Transaction. This is where the album continues its upward trajectory with a pretty nice run from Plays to Gloccs and Work with the Nah, Just Around You clip in between. It’s a cohesive compilation of some of Huey’s best thoughts and ideas. They work well together hand in hand to keep your attention while showcasing Huey’s gift.

I say all of that to say Flowers Before The Grave may have flown under your radar, but it can easily fly over whatever expectations you have. Huey Briss deserves his flowers and if this album doesn’t prove that I’m not sure what will. Be sure to add it to your playlist while your AC is set to 70 and enjoy. I’m off to do just that and also figure out why I can’t win a shoe raffle to save my life.
