Vanvleet by Monday Night

It's wild out here, my friends. Niggas are rooting for teams that are 0-2, iOS 15 has appeared in the atmosphere, and Evander Holyfield just participated in the worst boxing match of all time. Yet, through it all, I found myself in the cold hard streets of YouTube, where I came across "Vanvleet" by Monday Night. 

Sidenote: YouTube, we have to kill this whole "2:15 second, no skips advertisements before the video" thing. It's fucking up the entire vibe, and Nah, I am not about to pay for your subscription so let's find some middle ground here. Hit me up. 

“Vanvleet” starts with a brass sample that feels like luxury leather seats in a cherry red E30 BMW 3-series. Monday’s nonchalant tone takes the spotlight as he easily floats over a jazz baseline. “The drama starter, I'm not your fan, I'm not your man, I'm not Juwanna.” he raps as he touches on just about everything from money, women, his competition, sangria, and even piss tests. It's reminiscent of WuTang and Griselda but the Virginia emcee is unique in the pocket he chooses to rap in.

Halfway through I find myself thinking of how true to hip hop this is. For lack of better words, it's the “Fuck you, This is me and if you don’t like that, fuck off” brand of street hip hop that's needed. Blowing weed out the Bimmer in the middle of winter music. The video came out September 21st, yet it's from Monday's 2020 album 10 Days. 8 records full of high-level rap skill over east coast beats that motivate you to get money and get shit done.
