Love and Yearning in Raveena Aurora's "Mystery"

For those who embrace love stories, adore classic Bollywood and Indian culture, or wish to experience something beautiful, consider watching “Mystery” by Raveena Aurora.

Raised in New York and Connecticut, 29-year-old Raveena was nurtured by North Indian parents. As a child, she listened to Bollywood soundtracks. Having an appreciation for Bollywood films, last month, Raveena released the music video for “Mystery.” This enchanting video is laced with longing and love.

Filmed in Mumbai, scattered throughout “Mystery” are reminders of classic Bollywood including the opening shot of an aged Indian film receipt, old magazines, and even how it’s filmed. There’s a soft, almost fuzzy, effect on each shot as if the video was recorded decades ago. These details give the video an inviting, yet sentimental, setting.  

The story revolves around two women, one portrayed by Raveena, and the other by Krithika Iyer, who appears to be a single mother to a little girl. After meeting on a boat, the two women and the young girl explore Mumbai together, smiles adorning their faces as they visit Café Dela Paix, get their nails done, play badminton, and more.  

Gracing the video are vibrant colors: green, purple, and gold. The purple and gold elegantly complement each other while the green is lush and lively. Shades of orange and pink are used generously, accompanying scenes depicting the love budding between the two women.

In “Mystery,” Raveena expresses her love for someone, even though they’re hesitant. At the end of the video, Raveena’s character repeatedly disappears as the other woman searches for her. Love can be one-sided. The other person might not feel as strongly, or be unwilling to commit. Still, “Mystery” ultimately asks, “Why wait it out 'til the Earth breaks in tsunamis?” You never know what the future carries, so you should profess your love.  

Paired with the video, the song’s traces of longing, whether for a person, place, or a cherished part of the past, are emphasized. Although it’s a personal song, it reaches various viewers. With “Mystery,” Raveena Aurora continues to flourish in her own unique, but welcoming world of R&B music.
