World Premiere: 106 & Park: A Comeback?!
Everyone knows the hit B.E.T. show 106 & Park was THE SHOW to turn on as soon as you got home from school or the weekend hit. Started in 2000 and produced on B.E.T. (Black Entertainment Television) by Stephen Grant Hill and Lee Harris, this show centered around a 90-minute showcasing ten hottest songs, whether from established artists or introducing new ones. They debuted often in music videos from hip-hop, r&b, dancehall, and reggae. Initially hosted by A.J and Free, this show was a place where black people and other races as well, could feel comfortable in their skin as artists, going on a large platform to showcase their talents, had no problem getting appreciation or rejection from the audiences, and could feel a sense of belonging that television at the time was starting to make space for with B.E.T. being that original platform and haven. Lately, it’s been rumored that the popular music show is teeming to be rebooted, and here is a list of some evidence as to why it may be the case.
A.J.’s Instagram Post
Rumors started circulating about the show’s comeback when former host A.J. made an Instagram post (circa 2016), creating buzz around the show’s return post. While there was undoubtedly acclaim and positive feedback, there was no more confirmation on the subject. But fans of the show still wait with bated breath.
Stars Humble Beginning
Seeing artists get on this show was like magic. People either became the joke of your day or the greatest singer/rapper of all time, according to you. It helps immensely when discussing the “Where Are They Now” or “Unsung” discussions or going back to their interviews and performances to get those nostalgic feelings, dances, and melodies you once had.
Youtube Popularity in Algorithm
What has helped 106 & Park stay relevant despite its cancellation in 2014 is that people still flock to the videos to see all of their favorite artists, see the beginning of some drama, as mentioned earlier, between hosts, audience members or interviewees, or to relax and vibe out to some tunes. It has never been lackluster for entertainment all these years later.
Tyler Perry’s Purchase of B.E.T
There’s no question that fans of BET have given their brutally honest opinions of the network as a whole. Whether it be from the award shows or television shows to the lineups that should be screened for popularity or class and dignity. Whatever the case, there are reports that Tyler Perry has acquired the network. But, there are also talks that other potential buyers are vying to seal the deal and get that accredited fame and well-deserved flowers. Many people think it’s about time for someone with an eye for talent, class, and precision as Perry has to reboot the show. In contrast, others believe that a reboot of this magnitude should stay in the past due to music, whether the sound or the artists, just not being what it used to be.
Overall, 106 & Park might be the show that music in all genres or its core genres needs to be that push in the limelight. This show could be a breath of fresh air as owners come up with new ideas as to how to showcase that raw talent and bring back that original fan base and artists while also bringing to the future generations a take on the ways that music can be introduced that came before the use of Tik-Tok or Youtube influencers that many are familiar with today.
