A New Wave: I’m Just Gettin’ Started, Love by Wave Parker
My friends, I have to be honest with you. Some of you have been buggin' something serious. You tap your thumbs on your screen at 400Mb wifi speeds every week to root for teams that haven't won three football games. I want…no…need you to be better. If not for me then do it for yourselves. I'm willing to bet the stress of losing and watching Deontay Wilder get parked by Tyson Fury kept you from hearing the new good vibes. It's ok, as usual, I'm here for you.
A few weeks back Wave Parker sent me his new EP, and after having some time to put it in the rotation, I have multiple thoughts on it. The first being that I do indeed fuck with it, and it will continue to be in rotation.
The EP begins with 'Back In Business.' It's a decent intro track. Wave nails the energy here and brings what sounds less like braggadocious rapping and more like a perfectly patterned motivational speech over a horn-heavy trap beat. Jo-T provides the assist here, and while it is a good verse, it just feels out of place because the rap styles are a big contrast. So I'm not fully sold while listening.
"Asap" comes on and now I'm fully fucking sold. The beat is hypnotizing and would pair nicely with a top-shelf Sativa strain. A nod to A$AP mob 'Asap' showcases Wave's best verses on the project. The second verse is the star here. "Groovy ass nigga I'm him," he says it with his chest, and it's believable. "Bitch I been the wave before I even changed my name." 'Asap' is the standout, and hopefully, someone in his circle has told him the same.
You know how I feel about '97 Cocaine' and 'Don't Hate The Playa', both are in our #OnReplay playlist for a reason.
Sidenote: You ever be in the car when someone's playlist goes from Young Dolph to some slow R&B? Aux privileges done pal. they can't be allowed to continue confusing the vibe.
We move to 'YaFeelMe' my second favorite on the project. A Houston-like screwed beat accompanied by a Timbaland sample laid underneath Wave's slow-paced raps. He bodies this lane and I think he should lean into it moving forward. The flows remind me of Dom Kennedy or Larry June in tone but Wave's voice doesn't sound like anyone else.
The project ends with the title track "Just Gettin' Started' it's a good way to wrap things here. Wave raps as if he's putting the little homies on game…if you're wondering it's you. You are the little homies. The production is top tier and Wave sprinkles everyday gems and life lessons through not only this song but the entire EP.
'Just Gettin' Started, Love' is a nice intro to Wave Parker and something he should build on. It's well worth your Spotify/Apple subscription my friends. I'll catch you later though I have to buy a stockpile of fire ass hoodies to prepare myself for winter. While I do that go stream some Wave Parker and remember your new shorty is plotting on taking your hoodie before you even buy it dog. She's already envisioned herself in it. Stay safe.
