Unboxed: Terry Presume
I finally did it, my friends. I got Kyle Kuzma off the Lakers. Sports media will tell you it was the Laker's and Wizard's front offices, but those are lies. It was me, respectfully, through sheer prayer and will. That was just one of the many goals I reached this week between paying bills and swimming through the Apple Music algorithms to find what might be one of my favorite projects of the year. Definitely my favorite intro, at the least.
What Box? EP by Terry Presume is a journey through a plethora of different sounds and emotions. The title couldn't fit this project any better. Apple has it listed as indie rock, but that is a disservice to Terry, who does a great job of genre-blending from the first song to the last. The Florida artist has a very impressive way of working with multiple styles and sounds but still making it a cohesive project that flows together.
The six-track EP begins with Don't Wait Forever, and this song is so fucking fire! I know that's not the "journalist" way to put it but fuck it, we're all cousins here. I can be honest with you, right? "This Love won't last let's make our peace, I'll call you back when I get free, but baby don't you go and wait forever," Terry croons over a euphoric baseline that, if I'm being honest, had me ready to shed a thug tear from the jump. Terry paints a picture of a once beautiful relationship that's now reaching it's end. The melody on the first verse is broken up, and almost sounds as if Terry was freestyling these lyrics to a once loved one. It sounds real and feels like the person he was talking to was watching him record this. It's the perfect way to lead off a project and the perfect song to send your girl after she went to eat without you.
Sidenote: You ever call your girl and ask, "What you wanna eat," and she responds with, "I just ate? Instant stomach ache and feelings of betrayal. Gotta break up with her and focus on yourself.
Act Up is next, and it sends you to the other side of the mood spectrum. The breakup has happened, and it's revenge tour time. This is the theme song to making sure your ex sees you flex on her at every turn. "I'm gon' make you act up, today, I'm gone make you wish you never left," Terry sings over funk guitar riffs. So hop in your car with your new girl and ride past your ex's house on a Wednesday vibe. Pure fuck my ex-music.
None of This Alone is an honest love song that explores a broken person's themes with past traumas trying to convince another broken person that they can go through it all together. Something beautiful about toxic traumatized people finding love and each other together, right? I'd love to see this one performed live.
Personal and Zaza and Some Runtz are songs you need to experience yourself through the best set of noise-canceling headphones you have. Both are aesthetically pleasing to the ear. I'm writing you an essay at this point, so I'll keep it short and say both get a 4/5 from me.
Last up is Swimming, and I wanted to make sure I had enough time to dive into this. This is probably the most beautiful song on the EP. This is Terry VS his demons. He expresses the pain he feels from losing friends and women throughout his journey. It hasn't deterred him, but it still sits on his shoulders. Nothing quite like falling out with the people you envisioned making it big with and realizing that in the end, it's just you and your thoughts. 10/10 as far as outros go. This left me curious as to what's next for Terry. Before writing this, I had never heard of Terry Presume, but the What Box? EP has made me a fan wanting to hear more. There's no box you can put Terry Presume in, and I think that's what's going to make the world love him in the long run.
Alright, my pals I'm off to convince staples center employees that I'm Russell Westbrook's brother now cause I know Laker tickets are gonna be at 1986 crack cocaine prices. Until next time stream "What Box?" by Terry Presume and remember that girl on Instagram with 100k followers is not about to pull up on you and your air mattress. Focus on yourself.
