Two Words: Killa Kayla
When you realize your goals you write them down and work on them one by one. That is exactly what rising artist and model Killa Kayla is doing. I met the 25-year-old this past summer at a hair appointment in southern California. We bonded over music, which allowed her to share some unreleased sounds with me. One minute into a song I was blown away. Her voice just reels you in, and when her bar flow hit you just want to hear more. After hearing her music she shared that it wasn't on streaming services yet and I was surprised. How is an artist this talented and not playing in people's headphones and car stereos? Kayla openly explained her hopes and aspirations, wanting to find a good studio, networking, and even performing at shows.
That was back in June now we are in November and since then Kayla has crossed off all three of those goals and many more. You can catch her in LA performing at shows, when she isn't on stage she is in front of a camera for either a photo shoot or a video shoot. If the 25-year-old isn’t doing those three things then she is in the studio with Emo Steve working on new songs for the world to hear.
Before you hear any sounds from Kayla get to know her below. What made you get into the music scene? I’ve been making music since I was 7 years old, I’ve always dreamt of being a rapper and sharing my music. I was inspired by a friend to make a song so I made an EP.
How did you get the name, Killa Kayla? Killa came to me when I started creating music again after 10 years of taking a creative break. Killa is the most confident part of my ego and she really gets shit done. She is THE artist.
Often times you see an artisit debut and they will drop one song and call it day, but with you - you debuted in Summertime and since then you have been booked and busy. What keep's you motivated? Definitely my passion for music. I make music on the daily basis. I have too many ideas and too much time.
You have been working with alot of photographers, is it safe to say that you are tapping into the fashion world? Definitely! I’m becoming more comfortable with the people I work with and with being in front of the camera. I’ve also been finding my style. I see myself growing tremendously in the next coming years - I’m really just getting started.
Besides music and fashion when it comes to your music videos your visuals are so pristine. Where do you draw your inspiration from? I draw inspiration from my younger self, all the things I wanted to do and can do now. It’s second nature to tap into my past for inspiration. When did my 15-year-old self want to do all of this, well how much can a 15-year-old self really do that? I feel that rush and joy that I felt as a kid to create my own world. I feel like I’m doing it all over again times two. I can’t wait to see what I’ll produce a year from now.
- I draw inspiration from my younger self, all the things I wanted to do then, I can do now. All the creative control - all the money
