Zeal & Pristine

Holy by Ava Dasar

I think it's time to talk, my friends. It's time to discuss how we've spent the entire year absolutely trippin'. I just stumbled across a slew of tweets mentioning a new Myspace as I peruse the timeline with a glass of eggnog and brandy in hand. Judge me not b it is November which is just December eve cause nobody, not even Tupac, cares about thanksgiving. Turkey is dry, sweet potato pie is the most trash pie next to a fruit pie if you count that, and that one aunt nobody likes cannot cook mac and cheese but insist everyone loves it, it is a complete madness.

As I watch the timeline's descent into nostalgia, I come across a snippet from Seattle-based singer Ava Dasar. 15 seconds of a beautiful blend of soft vocals and sad feelings that sounds like something you're supposed to have a good cry too. I never cry though I just say, "yo, I'm kinda sad," out loud and keep it pushing, you know? I'm intrigued and instantly find myself looking for an artist page on Apple Music. Two features and one single. That's it. Nonetheless, I press play on the single.

Listed under R&B/Soul, "Holy" finds Ava exploring themes of Love and what it should be. She sings to a lover about all of the things she should feel but just isn't getting. "Love should be sweet, so why does my mouth taste so bitter every time you kiss me." She croons from the perspective of a woman on the edge of heartbreak. She just wants to see and feel the actions match the words of her love interest. Unfortunately, things have grown stale, and she does a great job of emoting that through the smooth vocal performance. You can feel exactly what she's saying, even if it has never happened to you.

For it to be the only song on her page, it's well polished. A great mix that sounds professional. My only knock is that there isn't more. Admittedly though, I have to blame the music industry for turning me into a spoiled kid who expects every artist I come across to have at least four albums, two mixtapes, and an EP in the tuck. I've been playing the song a lot since I found it, and the replay value hasn't diminished at all. If the album/project/EP or whatever the fuck artists are calling em these days sounds anything like this, I'm sold. Take my money now.

Sidenote: Moving forward, we're calling everything an album. 30 songs? Album. Three songs? Album. We are not going to keep doing the "It's just an EP" excuse you all use so that you don't have to admit your favorite artist just went zero of seven from beyond the arc.

With that being said imma head out, my friends. Listen to "Holy" by Ava Dasar, then tweet her and tell her you NEED more. Oh, and remember the next time your shorty texts, you "we need to talk" reply with "honestly I was thinking that same thing." then turn off your phone for an hour. Watch how humble things become.
