High Anxiety by Deytona
It's once again that time, my friends. Mercury is wearing retro jays, and the temperatures are hitting triple digits. Do not invite me anywhere that doesn't have AC. Don't even invite me anywhere that doesn't allow me to wear shorts, or I will have you arrested. The only things keeping me sane are my PS5 and good music, and if you haven't been able to find either, I'm here to help with one; the music. As far as the PS5, you’re on your own with that one.
I had just finished watching Romeo tell a wild lie during Verzuz when I decided to open Apple Music and stream California artist Deytona's new project, Joyride. While the entire project is worth your hard-earned streaming subscription, I found myself listening to High Anxiety over and over again.
There's no way you can play this song and not feel a thing. So soon as the bassline comes in and Deytona begins to croon over a beat that would be a perfect fit in a 'chill lofi hip hop beats to study to' playlist, it just hits different. "I been on the job overtime overnight getting no sleep," he raps before going on to talk about his current state of mind.
Sidenote: That line gave me amazon warehouse flashbacks, and I would rob a million banks for $1 before I ever go back.
Anyway, though, he's not trying to over-rap you with unneeded metaphors on this one. He gets straight to the point, and it's refreshing because it makes the song relatable. Sometimes you don't need eight forced struggle bars to say what you mean. Deytona is great at getting you from A to B without a plethora of cliché raps. It's reminiscent of Dom Kennedy or when the Uber driver just drives straight to the spot and doesn't try to create small talk or take a "shortcut." * chef's kiss* 5 star review, my guy.
You can feel the pain here too. I found myself nodding in agreement when he mentioned sleeping in student debt before I remembered I don't have student debt. If your raps don't make me feel like I'm right there with you in the trenches, please keep them in mint condition on your phone and away from my family and me.
Alright pals I have go watch CP3 eliminate Paul George from the playoffs and restore the feeling. If he doesn’t though please do not contact me for 5-7 business days. Check out the video for High Anxiety below and stream Joyride on all platforms.
