A Song To Encourage: Baby Queen's "We Can Be Anything"

Chasing her dreams, Arabella Latham, known commonly as Baby Queen, moved to London at the age of 18 but was born and brought up in South Africa. Since 2020, Baby Queen has released projects including Medicine, The Yearbook, as well as various singles, several of which were included in the soundtrack for Heartstopper, a TV series with a heartwarming coming-of-age story. Backed with infectious pop instrumentals and lyrics loaded with authenticity, Baby Queen has continuously connected with her audience.

In 2023, leading up to the release of her debut album, Quarter Life Crisis, 25-year-old Baby Queen released “We Can Be Anything,” on July 20th.

With alternative-pop instrumentals bursting with light, and strengthened by drums, the production to “We Can Be Anything” is enthusiastic and big. Energizing the song even more, Baby Queen sings as if she is relaying a story to a friend, putting emphasis in the right places. Her voice transitions from bold to soft effectively, showing both confidence and vulnerability, as she illustrates her message.

Examining the lyrics, “We Can Be Anything” comments that life’s purpose is unclear, even nonexistent, to many people. Naturally, this is distressing and overwhelming. However, bringing reassurance to herself and others, Baby Queen shares that since life lacks a clear purpose, “there is infinite potential.” We all have endless potential tucked inside ourselves.

Going further into the lyrics, Baby Queen was told something she needed at a certain time: anyone can be anything. Later, she repeated this to someone else who needed the message. This demonstrates that language has the ability to move, adapt, and console.

“We Can Be Anything” gleams with hope. Baby Queen, with her bold and sincere delivery, has the ability to reach out and comfort anyone who listens. Let’s look forward to Quarter Life Crisis, which is planned to drop on October 6th.
