Tyjhier Finding Hope in The In-Betweens

Oftentimes, when people are feeling drained, music can be a brief break or a consistent companion. With her debut album, The In-Betweens, Tyjhier opens up about her journey of finding happiness. Although it doesn’t shy away from her trials, with her stunning voice and vulnerable lyrics, The In-Betweens is ultimately hopeful.

The In-Betweens leads with “Find Your Way.” The production is minimal, allowing Tyjhier’s warm voice to glide through the space. Her words encourage listeners to choose their own paths, but she also opens up about herself in lines such as, “Yesterday I was ashamed I felt this way, but not today. I’ll find my way.” Undoubtedly, Tyjhier’s declaration that she’ll find her path is meaningful for her life, but it’s also a valuable reminder for listeners.

Continuing with “Better Off,” the neo soul production is lush, with drums adding the perfect amount of intensity. Rooted in the song is Tyjhier’s adoration for her boyfriend. She describes her love with lyrics including, “Your soul speaks right to me.” This relationship isn’t established on attraction. There is a deep and mutual understanding. Due to this, Tyjhier ponders if they would be better off living together, rather than being long-distance.

Encompassing somber sounds of rain, surges of thunder, and light piano, “Showers (Shower Session 1)” has Tyjhier admitting that she feels lost in her life. She says, “I live confused. Don’t know what step is next. Expectations, obligations, I just cannot win.” At a young age, Tyjhier is being swarmed with uncertainties and burdens. Instead of being excited or ambitious, she is unsure and dismayed. Although the song is short, it is packed with emotion.

Swirling with edgy instrumental and traces of piano melodies, “Save Me” is one of the most memorable songs on the album. While Tyjhier’s voice is breathtaking, it’s brimming with sadness. She feels like no one can see her, and that she’s sinking. Some particularly poignant lyrics include, “If I could take their pain away, I would, but I can’t even save myself right now.” Despite the heartbreaking lyrics, this song may be a gentle reminder that it’s okay, even necessary, to save yourself first.

Moving forward, “I Just Wanna Be (Shower Session 2)” has similar production as the first shower session, but this one is more stripped back with no piano and no bursts of thunder. This simplicity makes the song lighter, and more hopeful. The song is centered around one wish, “I just want to be happy.” The wish for happiness is significant in attaining a fulfilling life. This song is a positive shift in the album, the promise of sun and growth after a rain shower.

Perhaps the most fun song on the album, “Moods” is a song that listeners can groove to. The music video is bright and upbeat, matching the energy of the song. Lyrically, Tyjhier lays it all out there for her significant other, saying it takes boundaries, clear communication, and work to form a healthy, long-lasting relationship. This track is honest, but sweet and optimistic.

Nearing the end of The In-Betweens, “Opening Up (Shower Session 3)” demonstrates even more personal growth. The lyrics reveal that Tyjhier is endeavoring to find her own way in life and be more hopeful. Lyrics such as, “Pour everything ‘cause the sun shines bright in May,” reveal acceptance, as well as looking forward to the future. Tyjhier has newfound trust that life will bring her happier times and she will be able to endure.

Closing the album is “Stick Around (Honey),” an exquisite love ballad. Tyjhier’s voice is swelling with love and tenderness as she expresses her feelings for her significant other and implores him to commit as long as possible. The production heightens around a minute into the song as Tyjhier affirms her feelings.

Throughout the album, Tyjhier has shared her struggles and her realization that she needs to strive for happiness, even if the journey will have growing pains and setbacks. A notable part of this happiness is this cherished relationship and tending to her own needs.

Residing in New York, the 23 years old R&B artist has so much potential. Tyjhier’s music is wonderful not only because of the charming production but because of Tyjhier’s soulful and affectionate voice. Her lyrics and the way she sings extend directly from her heart. It’s both captivating and comforting the way she leads listeners into her world. With her debut album, The In-Betweens, it is evident that we should look forward to whatever Tyjhier releases next.
