An Interview With a Journalist

Journalism isn't foreign, but its culture is a little complex. Journalism is an ever-growing field; you have journalists like us here at Zeal and Pristine who cover music artists. If you are keeping tabs on the presidential race you might spot journalist, Wolf Blitzer live on CNN. If you're not sure if you are wearing a pullover or Tee-Shirt for the day, you might tune into weather Anchor Maria Quiban. If you are a sports fan we have journalists in that field too take upcomer Q.  This central Florida native may have been in the writing scene for only a year but his resume can make your head spin. He is
covering not only all things sports at the University of Central Florida, but he also has 407 Eagles his site where he covers his favorite team Football team, the Philadelphia Eagles. On top of that, he has PHL Sports Nation and even Sebys Podcast. Not bad for a journalist who has been in the scene for a year right? And his ambition doesn’t stop there, he is steady trying to grow his work ethic make more moves, “If you are reading this feel free to reach out.” He says and without further ado here is Q .

You just wrapped up an internship, was it hard to balance your work, writing and your studies?  I remember I was in the middle of midterms, and it also was the middle of the season, so back to back home football games, volleyball [games] I had to take a trip down to UCF, the very next morning I had a test. [So] at times, it was hard, two of my classes were online; therefore, I worked ahead of them, same with my other classes. It was stressful but towards the end, I balanced it out.

What was your motivation to keep going? I’m about to get a little deep here, so Marquis my best friend he played football he put me onto football, he passed away, August 29th. The first football game was August 29th seven years since his passing, I was asked to work the game. When I walked on the field seeing the lights, seeing the players up close, watching all the plays it was surreal,  it felt like he was there with me, looking down on me.  Because I didn't think I'd be asked to work that game,I won't forget that, ever.  So whenever I'm stuck, I think back to when I stepped on that field.

You cover sport's media, but you did interview Hip-Hop artist Lamar Parish happed how did that come about? Wanting to help each other out, I'm a journalist, [so] I wanted to branch out, he was trying to promote it so we came together.

Since you tapped into the music side is it safe to say you're going to expand your skills to all platforms? I honestly have artists come in contact with me, but it's between this internship, my school, [my] job. Plus the team to interview, the artists. I have to get the camera [crew], and the spot ready. If I made it a more of priority, I'm sure it would pop off more.

Speaking of expansion, you are a huge fan of the Philadelphia Eagles would you consider doing something with them? That's my dream job, whatever I could do with that organization, sign me up.

Back in October, the NCAA announced they would allow college athletes to make a profit off their image and names. As a college sports journalists, how do you feel about this? If you had asked me this months ago, I would have given you a different answer but now, let them get paid. I was thinking about it selfishly, I'm this kid who never even played sports who has to drive 35 minutes, make this commute spend money on gas and tolls, spend money for classes, - but I thought if I applied myself harder in sports or something, then I would have the opportunity to play at the collegiate level which requires hard work and dedication. They should be rewarded for their efforts. Let them get paid.

As a college journalist, what athletes are you excited to see grow in their field? He left school his junior year, but definitely Gabriel Davis he was UCF leading receiver in yards.

What sets you apart from other journalists? I feel like I write for the common person, I write for you to feel a type of way. I write to let you know how use stats as reference, but no sugar coating I write how I feel about the game. Hopefully, it can influence you and steer you in a different kind of way and help you formulate an opinion you didn’t think of before.

Do you have any favorite journalist? Brandon Lee Gown.

What advice could you give to other journalists? At the end of the day, it is what you make it. Like my [professor] in journalism told me, "You've got to get up off your ass,  [because] the stories aren't going to come to you. You have to be ambitious; you have to apply yourself and be focused [and] be determined.”
