Creating fresh and sleek music, it took only one song for Tyla to be recognized as a soaring superstar. Born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa, music has always been a cherished constant in Tyla’s life, and this love for music is detected in her artistry.

In 2019, Tyla debuted with “Getting Late,” which provoked the curiosity of many through its merging of R&B and pop with amapiano, a genre of house music that surfaced from South Africa. The genre includes spontaneous and experimental piano melodies as one of its unique components.

Following “Getting Late,” Tyla has dropped six singles, three of which arrived this year. Glossy and irresistible, “Been Thinking” is a song to lure you into the middle of the dancefloor. Encompassing gorgeous vocals and harmonies, “Girl Next Door” combines contemporary R&B with afrobeat to create something both serene and refreshing. Most recently, Tyla dropped “Water” on July 28th.

Wrapping listeners with warmth, “Water” has instrumentals invigorated by afrobeats. With drums and synths infusing the song with further life and bounce, it’s easy for listeners to hit replay on “Water” again and again.

Tyla’s voice, simultaneously sweet and sensual, flows effortlessly with the instrumentals. The backing vocals on the chorus give the song additional fervor. Throughout the song, Tyla implores the person she’s with, “Take me where I ain't been before/ Can you blow my mind?/Set off my whole body.” Clear in expressing Tyla’s wishes, “Water,” is a song teeming with desire.

Between Tyla’s calm confidence and the captivating production, “Water” is the perfect song to submerge in. With seven standout singles that each illustrate her compelling spin on R&B and pop, 21-year-old Tyla has a bright future ahead of her.
