The Complexity of Tamera’s “Diversion”

Experiencing turbulent relationships, and knowing how damaging they are, doesn’t make it easy to remove them from your life. However, it can be comforting to hear a song that delves into situations and feelings that are familiar to you. The conflicting and distressing emotions involved with unhealthy relationships and negative self-image are detailed in Tamera’s new single, “Diversion.”

Tamera, an R&B artist residing in London, has been creating rich and expressive music since 2019. Following her first single “Romeo”, Tamera released an EP, “Afrodite,” in 2021, and multiple singles. The latest of which was “Diversion.”

Five seconds into “Diversion,” the dark, almost eerie, production encompasses you. A deep bass and consistent beats intensify the atmosphere, without overpowering Tamera’s incredible voice. At times, Tamera’s voice skims through the words effortlessly. In other moments, her words are phrased in a direct, yet conversational manner. As “Diversion” carries on, Tamera’s belts swell from her soul, further impacting her listeners.

Throughout “Diversion,” Tamera refers to poor self-esteem and past trauma as reasons why she had been unable to leave her relationship. This person was a distraction from her self-hatred and other inner conflicts. Although the relationship wasn’t healthy, and was a way for Tamera to avoid helping herself, she welcomed the diversion. The lyrics, “I found my peace in the chaos and no sleep,” are heartbreaking, but also truthful for many. Thankfully, Tamera informs she’s healed since, and that this song sort of represents a goodbye to this part of her history. Perhaps the creation of “Diversion” is also a beneficial reminder for Tamera to treat herself with care.

By providing honest and stirring lyrics, the production that immerses listeners in a grim and majestic atmosphere, and Tamera’s emotion-packed voice, “Diversion” is a song that’s meaningful both to Tamera and many listeners. Whatever music Tamera releases next, she will have many supporters.
